TAAL VOLCANO
SHOT BY BORGY ANGELES FOR THE COVER OF NOLISOLI’S DISCOURSE ISSUE.
For Nolisoli’s cover story, we revised the experience of a traditional fashion editorial into a performative exercise in site-specific discourse.
We assembled at sunrise, styled all 10 crew & embarked across Taal Lake & up an active volcano.
All interactions (transport & animal) were spontaneous: we worked only with what the island provided. The interview took place between water breaks & culminated over a volcano-steamed lunch at the caldera. We activated an alchemic space: earth, air, fire, water— transforming the abstract notion of site-specific tropical performance into a tangible, readable output.
If fashion imagery can crystallize less accessible themes, our revision of the medium further enticed & embroiled the viewer. By situating our work in the lexicon of participatory interaction — literally taking a Toqa-attired magazine crew on a journey with us, then having them relay the experience to their readership — we locate an academic understanding of tropical production in the excitement of adventure.
