Thai Biennale Uniforms

TOQA x Ying Batik

One of the most significant elements of our contribution to the Thailand Biennale 2025 was the creation of uniforms for its cultural actors. TOQA designed 120 uniform sets for the docents, curators, management & installation teams — forming a shared & functional visual vocabulary of Phuket identities.

We merged Ying Batik’s hand-painted techniques with TOQA’s sport-resort sensibilities, developing motifs together and teaching each other how to create something hybrid between our practices.

All textiles are 100% hand-painted batik. The Phuket fruits motif references pineapple, mangosteen, durian, rambutan — specific to Phuket but familiar food linkages across Southeast Asia.

The fisherman pants draw from the folding of banana leaves, practical and sculptural forms used in the tropics to wrap, carry, and hold, translated into this modular silhouette.

These uniforms are a collaboration between TOQA and YingBatikPaint, designed and workshopped between our studios in Manila and Phuket.

Thai Biennale Uniforms

The Thai Biennale uniform consists of one shirt and one pant. We encouraged every participant to wear it their own way and make it their own.
